Emilio Rojo 2021

Emilio Rojo 2021 is the interpretation of an exceptional plot: a labyrinth of 1.2 ha of terraces on the western slope of the Avia valley with nascent exposure. A place in which to find the perfect symbiosis between inland Galicia, the co-planting of varieties, the sábrego soil and colleiteiro viticulture. Emilio Rojo is an unrepeatable vineyard and wine. Treixadura, lado, godello, albariño, caíño blanco, torrontés and loureira are reminiscent of the historical past and the diversity of the environment. The knowledge acquired over the generations, from colleiteiro to colleiteiro, elevates its elaboration to excellence. A complex nose, with diverse and integrated aromas that reflect the environment, the grape varieties, the soil and the climate. Energy and depth in the mouth reflecting the plot. The fortune of transmitting a unique vineyard.

The winter of 2021 was rainy, with a large amount of precipitation accumulating from the end of January to the beginning of March. Budbreak occurred at the end of this month, combined with high rainfall, which required special demands in the management of each plot. Sunshine and warmth appeared at the end of July, facilitating optimal vineyard development. The year was heading towards an uncomplicated harvest until several days of rain in September made harvesting difficult. Both in the vineyard and in the winery, all the grapes were selected cluster by cluster to ensure the exact point of ripeness and maximum quality in the winemaking process. The grapes were harvested on four days: September 6, 12, 18 and 22. 2021 was a turning point in the development of Viña Meín-Emilio Rojo as it achieved the desired balance in the vineyard and showed the essence of future vintages.

Emilio Rojo’s vineyard symbolizes the success of Ribeiro’s historic viticulture. Next to the village of Ibedo, in a plot facing the rising sun, the various terraces that wind up the hillside hide the perfect balance between the decomposed granite soils, the Galician inland climate and the many local varieties. A place that preserves the winegrowing past of the Avia valley. The knowledge of generations of colleiteiros have managed to extract from this unrepeatable environment a unique wine. Emilio Rojo raises the terms of viticulture adapted to each vine, which requires an extraordinary effort in monitoring the evolution of the vineyard.

During the days prior to harvesting, the grapes were tasted vine by vine. The 2021 vintage was made respecting the optimum ripening times for each variety and each area of the plot. The grapes were harvested in 12 kg boxes. The different grapes of treixadura, albariño, lado, godello, torrontés, caíño blanco and loureira were also selected on arrival at the winery, manually with absolute control of each cluster. Fermentation was carried out in stainless steel tanks with indigenous yeasts and continued in the same tanks for the following 12 months. For greater protection, the wine contains sulfites. It was bottled in the summer of 2022 and spent 18 months in the cellar before release.
