O Gran Meín Tinto 2020

The fall of 2019 and winter of 2020 were rainy and cold. Spring started with pleasant weather, which caused a three-week advance in the cycle. The end of April and May accumulated a large amount of precipitation, as is usual in the area. This spring in particular, the vineyard required very precise management. With the arrival of summer, hot and dry weather promoted good vineyard health. The 2020 vintage will be easy to remember for the level of demand it placed on the team and for the experience they gained.
Emilio Rojo’s vineyard symbolizes the success of Ribeiro’s historic viticulture. Next to the village of Ibedo, in a plot facing the rising sun, the various terraces that wind up the hillside hide the perfect balance between the decomposed granite soils, the Galician inland climate and the many local varieties. A place that preserves the winegrowing past of the Avia valley. The knowledge of generations of growers have managed to extract from this unrepeatable environment into a unique wine. Emilio Rojo raises the terms of viticulture adapted to each vine, which requires an extraordinary effort in monitoring the evolution of the vineyard.
During the days prior to harvest, the grapes are tasted vine by vine to decide which vines are harvested and which must wait. In the 2020 vintage there were two harvests. The grapes are harvested in 12kg boxes. The different grapes of treixadura, albariño, lado, godello, torrontés, caíño blanco and loureira are selected again in the winery and pressed together to extract the first press wine that represents Emilio Rojo’s plot. Fermentation of each vintage was carried out with indigenous yeasts separately in stainless steel tanks and a concrete egg. It continued to develop in the same tanks for the next 10 months. For greater protection, the wine contains sulfites. It was bottled in the summer of 2021 and aged for 28 months in the bottle before release.
