O Gran Meín Tinto 2021
The winter of 2021 was rainy, accumulating a large amount of precipitation from the end of January to the beginning of March. Budbreak came at the end of that month, combined with high rainfall, which meant that special demands were made on the management of each plot. Sunshine and warmth appeared at the end of July, facilitating optimal development of the vineyard. The year was heading towards an uncomplicated harvest until September, when several days of adverse weather conditions made harvesting difficult. Both in the vineyard and in the winery, all the grapes were selected cluster by cluster to ensure the exact ripening point and maximum quality in the winemaking process. The 2021 harvest of the red varieties began on September 23 and ended on September 30.
The influence of the Galician climate is crucial for the Ribeiro red varieties. The Osebe and Ribeira plots, in the vicinity of Leiro but in the northward passage of the Avia valley, are east facing, or naciente, as it is locally known. Osebe is 0.95 ha of brancellao while Ribeira is 1.05 ha of caíño longo. Both have a predominant (and characteristic in the whole area) presence of sábrego or decomposed granite. Particularly, in Osebe it is mixed with some very fine sand while in Ribeira the sábrego is intermixed with schist. The brancellao and caíño longo of both plots achieve a marked Atlantic character together with the optimal ripening of the grapes from the Galician interior. The artisanal viticulture and the focus on the balance of both vineyards achieves a genuine elaboration.
The brancellao and caíño longo of O Gran Meín Tinto are harvested in 12kg boxes and taken to the winery. After an initial selection in the field, the grapes are sorted in the winery. According to the peculiarities of each plot fraction and its ripening characteristics, the wine is made and aged separately in small stainless steel tanks and wine globes. After alcoholic and malolactic fermentation, the wine remained in the same tanks for 10 months. It was bottled in the spring of 2022 and for greater protection, the wine contains sulfites. This wine was aged in bottle for 24 months before release.
